Underwater is no place for Gear Failure…Especially Brassiere Failure.So, what’s the big deal about the “right bra” for diving? Well, since women are a breath ahead on air consumption versus our male counterparts, our ability to stay under longer is legendary. No GirlDiver wants to end her anticipated 90 minute dive at the 50 minute mark (when the boys start their ascents) due to a misaligned underwire piercing her side.

So, what to look for in a dive bra? “Sports Bras” are rated for the level of aerobic impact they can withstand, or how tightly they compress to snug around you. But in diving, we’re not looking at high-impact activities, and our dive suits are capable of more compression at depth than any sports bra could hope for. We need support that attends to the “bounce” while being comfortable and avoiding unsightly adjustments.

Unfortunately, the everyday bra, especially an all-elastic one, won’t stop the bouncing. The answer is the dreaded sports bra. This garment once was as welcome as an albatross around the neck–and about as attractive. Because it was tailored only for small-breasted women, it flattened the breasts and provided all the comfort of a boa constrictor.

But sports bras have come a long way. Recently, high-tech engineering has fashioned bras that are not only comfortable and functional, but stylish and fashionable as well. In fact, many sports bras can be worn as outerwear and come in a variety of colors and styles.

This article is going to presuppose that I am talking to drysuit divers, as in the “wetsuit” world, we would want to talk about the right swimsuit for the job. (Another article)

Types of Sports Bras

~Shimmels are tank tops with an integral shelf bra that provides support for low- or medium-impact activities.

~Compression sports bras come in two basic options. Scoop-back styles work well for small- and medium-breasted women during low- or medium-impact activities. Racer-back styles are more supportive and are for medium- and high-impact activities. Thin spaghetti straps provide less support than wider straps.

~Encapsulation style sports bras separate and support to avoid the “uni-boob” look. They provide larger-breasted women excellent support for medium- and high-impact activities.

Sports bras should fit tighter than regular bras, but they shouldn’t be too tight as to interfere with breathing. This is especially important in diving, as our primary skill as a diver is to “breathe” underwater. When trying on a sports bra, check the following things:

~There should be no chafing around the armholes, shoulder straps or seams. If the sports bra has hooks or snaps, make sure those don’t chafe, either. Cups should be seamless or at least have covered seams. Hardware like hooks or fasteners must be covered with fabric and should be cushioned for maximum protection.

~The straps shouldn’t dig into your shoulders, nor slip down your shoulders. Choose wide, non-stretch straps for best results. In addition, a wide “Y-back” panel can increase support and prevent slipping. Remember, there is no way to reposition those straps once you’ve zipped your suit.

~To make sure you have the right size, raise your hands over your head. If the elastic band moves up your rib cage, you need a smaller size. Be certain the armholes allow ample room for the unrestricted arm movements necessary during the donning of your drysuit.

~Test the bra’s support by jumping or running in place. You’ll be able to feel whether it’s sufficiently supportive or not. This would account for the movement when we’re jostling the BCD into place.

Because we tend to “glisten” when we carry our 85 lb. scuba kit down to the shore, it becomes necessary to prevent moisture from accumulating next to the skin. The bra should be a synthetic blend including a “breathable” material such as Lycra mesh to help evaporate sweat and keep odor in check. The more supportive a sports bra is, the less effective it will be at wicking moisture because of sturdier fabric and construction. While cotton provides more comfort than synthetic materials, it becomes cold when wet, so it is never recommended for any undergarments while drysuit diving. (See article) The bra also should be lined under the breasts and under the arms with material like CoolMax that removes moisture from the skin by “wicking” the sweat to your outer layers.

Determine your size. Studies show that more than 68% of women do not know their proper bra size. The following steps will help with the fit:

First: Measure around your rib cage, just under your breasts. Add 5 and round to the nearest even number. This is your band size.

Next: Measure loosely around your bust at the fullest part. Be sure your tape stays straight across your back. Round to the nearest whole number.

Finally: Subtract your band size from your bust measurement. Use the resulting number to determine your cup size as follows:

~1″ difference = A cup

~2″ difference = B cup

~3″ difference = C cup

~4″ difference = D cup

~5″ difference = DD cup

The Samsung J700 is a nice looking phone, not as sleek and impressive as others out there on the market now, but still nice. Weighing in at only 92 grams its super light and the display is 2″ and 128 x 160 pixels with 65K colours. The capacity of 1000 phone numbers is awesome and will pretty much leave even the most social person with more room to add numbers. The memory is at 10 MB with the ability to expand another 2 GB. There are not many choices when you want to choose a colour though with only black and pink being available. The camera is probably one of the smaller in the market right now at 1.6 mega pixels, but it will still work. It has an FM tuner and MP3 player also, which is always a great option for that music lover. Talk time for the Samsung J700 is 3 hours and standby time is 250 hours. Besides the looks of this phone it really isn’t that bad.

The Samsung L770 mobile phone is a bit nicer looking phone, but still not the sleekest on the market by far. Weighing even lighter then the J700 at 86 grams its ultra lightweight is great, the display is only a 2.1″ but that’s a good display size anyway, the pixels are sharper then the J700 at 240 x 320. Holding an awesome amount of numbers like the Samsung J700 with 1000 numbers with 30 MB of embedded memory you should be able to store a good number of songs from the MP3 option and FM tuner you shouldn’t be bored with listening to the same old song. The camera seems to be the standard 2.0 mega pixel that seems to be the one that is located in most mobile phones now. The talk time is a great 5 hours and the standby is 200 hours. The biggest downfall of this mobile phone is that it only comes in one colour, silver, if you don’t mind that colour you should like this phone easily.

If you compare the phones they are pretty close of the two the Samsung L770 is a nicer looking phone though, if you want that sleek modern look. The Samsung L770 also has a bit better camera, but really it’s not the best that is out there. The display on the L770 mobile phone is sharper and would be easier to see if you have glasses or contacts. Both mobile phones are very light, so you won’t have to worry about them getting to heavy for you to hold when you’ve been on the phone for hours.

Overall really both of these mobile phones are nice, but the chance of finding a different mobile that beats both of these is pretty easy.

If you are from the school of thought that diving watches have to cost an arm and a leg, you have not considered a Casio dive watch. A Casio watch is not only incredibly affordable, with most of the watchmaker’s diving timepieces available from around fifty to one-fifty dollars, they are solid, functional and look as good as a more expensive diving watch. What’s more, Casio diver watches come bundled with a similar array of features. The bezel is crammed with information and a curved mineral dial window gives users with the perception of a flat, deep-set front when below the ocean surface.

The watch illumination system possesses a dual color luminous paint - green on the watch hands, blue for hour markers - enabling a wearer to register dive readings even when available light is non existent. While the luminous tips of the Casio dive watch have a limited lifespan in comparison to more expensive diving watches, the powerful dual LED of the Casio can be used as a backup and frames a dramatic “flash-light” onto the watch front at both 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock. When you depress the button located at the two o’clock position, the full face of the watch is flooded with light and for three seconds.

Most Casio diving watches are rated to depths of between one hundred and two hundred meters (three thirty to six sixty feet) making them perfect for all activities in and around the water such as snorkeling, swimming and recreational diving.

While Casio watches are ideally suited to salt water pursuits, you should be careful with hot water when you wash the dishes, take a shower or have a bath, as hot water can damage the protective seals.

Despite its good quality, Casio diving watches do suffer one minor shortcoming. Some wearers have complained that, the wrist band is the sole component of a Casio that can be regarded as the “achilles heel” of these watches. Casio watch bands are reported to be rigid, spongy and awkward to wear. The band has a short life expectancy and one should expect to replace it soon after you start wearing the watch. Some customers have reported no such issues however.

Other wearers have fixed the band issue by swapping their Casio strap with a velcro Timex Expedition adjustable 16-20mm watch band. This band is made for Timex Expedition watches and displays the word “Timex”, but it may work out to be a more suitable fit.

Should you decide to exchange straps, it is a simple matter of popping out the Casio strap, pulling out the Casio springs, then attaching the Timex strap and springs. This basic job takes about three minutes of your time and can be done at home without visiting a specialist watch or jewelry shop.

Contrary to popular opinion, Casio dive watches offer exceptional value to those looking for low priced diving watch. For professional diving ventures, it is still worth finding a few extra hundred (or thousand) more dollars for a a professional grade watch. These are no Tag Heurer’s or Victorinox’s, but at a mere fraction of the cost a Casio dive watch is a practical choice for beginners or amateurs just looking to get started, seeking backup watch, or on a budget.

Dressing men is one of my favorite things, because just a few tips can make a big difference for you. Of course, I do love menswear and helping men look and feel their best. Moreover, because I have dressed many men on television and in private life. I know just what is needed.

First, it does not matter what shape you are. You can have a body like Brad Pitt or Sponge Bob, and still look great, IF you know what to wear. Second, buy what fits you regardless of the size on the tag. All designers cut clothes differently. For example, Hugo Boss tends to cut narrow. Some of his labels, especially in small sizes, run very tight and narrow and would barely fit your baby brother. You may need to size up to get the right fit. Third, if you have to disguise some extra pounds or gain a few pounds because the only six pack you own is in your frig, then read on for some more dressing tips.

Broaden your chest:

• Lighter colors and interesting details around shoulders in clothing will make you appear broader
• Avoid clothes fitting too tight unless you are going for the scrawny, rock star look
• Horizontal stripes will be your friend, and make you look wider, verticals will only make you look narrow

• Dark and muted colors are best to camouflage, along with lightweight, soft, matte fabrics. Never shiny Boogie Nights specials
• Shirts too baggy will only make you look bigger. Skim the body, Baby!
• Wear your pants at your waist guys! Under the belly will make you look heavier. Trust me on this one!
• Opt for suits that are dark, pinstripes will be amazing
• Try a 1 or 2 button jacket to give you a sleek silhouette
• Monochromatic dressing will always make you look like you lost 10 lbs

Do not forget to look at the rear view:

If you have a full-size butt:

• Pants need to be a bit looser (I am not talking clown styles here), relaxed, easy fit. Flat fronts will work but make sure they are not so tight that the front pockets stick out, go up a size if needed
• Waistline of pant should not be too high. Otherwise, your butt will look even bigger. Think elephant!
• Keep pants dark and sleek. Pants with a lot of whistles and bells will add attention to hip area

If you have a pancake butt:

• Back pocket details such as flaps add heft
• Baggy pants still not good here, makes your butt look flatter
• Jackets and long shirt tails that hit below the hip are best for camouflage

Check your neck:

• Thin necks need a wide spread dress shirt collar to give width
• Thick necks should stick to a regular point collars and open neck styles look awesome
• V necks will make your neck look thinner, crew neck will emphasize thickness
• Turtlenecks on long necks only, makes short necks look thicker and well… like a turtle

Arms and the man

• Great arms, flaunt them with short sleeves and tapered shirts
• Skinny arms need more fabric around them to look fuller, layers again, will be your friend, along with sweaters
• Thin arms look better long sleeved shirts with sleeves rolled, and then short sleeves. Gives your arms bulk
• Big biceps need full cut shirts, and sometimes custom shirts are best to get a perfect fit

So there, you have my tips for emphasizing the positive and eliminating the negative. Hey guys, I do not think I have worked with anyone who has not looked significantly better with these few adjustments. My fourth tip is to find a fabulous tailor to achieve great style and terrific fitting clothes (this may take time to find the “one” but it is well worth the effort!). And my fifth and final tip is to know your skin color and best colors and use them to your advantage. Darker colors really do diminish your not -so -hot spots and light colors highlight your hot ones. Beyond darks and lights, there are cool and warm colors, mixing patterns, etc. but those pointers are for future articles, so stay tuned.
